The in-person portion of selecting a new president for Shoreline Community College is about to get underway.
On Monday, April 7, Paula T. Langteau , Campus Dean and CEO at the University of Wisconsin-Marinette, is scheduled to be at Shoreline for a series of interviews with campus constituencies. A public forum is scheduled for 2:45-3:45 p.m., in the PUB Main Dining Room.
On Friday, April 11, Cheryl Roberts, President of Chemeketa Community College, in Salem, Ore., is scheduled to be on campus for her series of interviews. The public forum for Roberts is also scheduled 2:45-3:45 p.m. Earlier, it had been scheduled for a different room, but will now also be in the PUB Main Dining Room.
Each candidate will go through a full day of meetings and events. The days start with a reception, then an interview with members of the college Executive Leadership, a break for lunch followed by a campus tour, the open public forum, a similar forum with students and then an interview and dinner with the Board of Trustees .
Langteau has been Campus Dean and CEO at the University of Wisconsin-Marinette, since 2004. Prior to that job, she was Dean of Instruction at Nicolet Area Technical College in Rhinelander, Wis. She also served as the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Georgia Perimeter College, Atlanta, Ga. Langteau received a B.A., Eureka College, Eureka, Ill., earned an M.A. and has completed Ph.D. coursework at Ball State University, Muncie, Ind.
Roberts has been President of Chemeketa’s multi-campus college in the Salem, Ore.-area since 2007. She previously served as Vice President for Instruction at South Seattle Community College. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Seattle University, a Master of Arts in Student Personnel Administration in Higher Education from Ohio State University and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Seattle University.
Shoubee Liaw, Chair of the Board of Trustees, said feedback from this on-campus portion of the selection process is very important.
“I really urge people to come and participate in these open public forums and share your thoughts,” Liaw said. “The sessions will be open to faculty, administrators, staff, students and the general public.”
Feedback forms will be available at the public forum sessions. Feedback from those sessions will be collected and forwarded to the board for use in making a final decision. The trustees are also accepting feedback via e-mail at: sccpressearch2014@shoreline.edu
The Board of Trustees has scheduled a Special Meeting at 4 p.m., Monday, April 14. This meeting will include a closed, executive session “to evaluate the qualifications of applicants for public employment” and will be reconvened into open session following the executive session.
The Campus Open Forum sessions will be video recorded, which will become part of the public record. Vice President for Human Resources and Legal Affairs Stephen Smith said that the videos will be available for viewing and checkout at the college library after the selection process is completed. “Initially, we considered live streaming the forums, but realized that might provide some candidates with an unfair advantage,” Smith said. “After reviewing our options and discussion with our consultants, we decided on this course of action.”
The process to get to this point began in June, 2013, when former President Lee Lambert resigned to take a position at Pima Community College in Tucson, Ariz. Then-Vice President for Administrative Services Daryl Campbell was appointed as Interim President during the search.
The trustees decided to hire the Association of Community College Trustees to assist in the search. An 18-member search committee that included all on-campus constituencies and community members was then appointed to review candidate applications and make recommendations to the trustees. The trustees then announced four finalists for the job. In recent weeks, however, two of those finalists accepted other positions and withdrew from Shoreline’s process.
