Joseph “JD” Humphreys, a 31-year-old student at Shoreline Community College, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2013 in what police say was a hit-and-run in the Kenmore area, about seven miles from the college.
According to local news reports quoting police, a woman walking her dog found a body around 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of NE 185th Street and 62nd Avenue NE, an area with no sidewalk and few street lights. Later in the day, a 24-year-old woman turned herself in to police.
Humphreys was a student in the Clean Energy Technology program at the college, according to a college official.
JD will be missed very much by his fellow students and instructors. Joe brought enthusiasm, interest, and warmth to class that was appreciated by all. It was a pleasure having him in my class this term. Our feelings of loss, and condolences to his family are profound and deep.
The memorial service for JD will be held on Saturday 10/26 at 1pm at Wiggins and Sons in Ballard, 2003 NW 57th St., Seattle 98107. Preceding the service there is a viewing from 11am to 1pm.
My sympathy goes out to the family and friends of this young man, a man clearly on the path of a new career. I live in the neighborhood where he was killed. Without sidewalks and good lighting, it’s very dangerous at night. That said, this man will be missed by many people. He leaves a hole in our hearts and in our community and his loss is felt widely. He left us too soon. And I pray also for the driver who hit him. For that is a grief that she will carry for a long, long time. This is a sad situation all around. I didn’t know JD personally, but I know Kenmore and I know this college and I want you to know that strangers care.
