Shoreline’s student-run newspaper, The Ebbtide, placed second in the prestigious General Excellence category in the 2019 Pacific Northwest Association of Journalism Educators (PNAJE) contest. This is the ninth time in twelve years that the paper has placed in the General Excellence category while also nabbing awards across several other categories.
“I am honored to work with our team of dedicated, adaptable and hard-working student journalists,” said The Ebbtide Editor-in-Chief, Azia Lualhati. “It’s fantastic that we get to represent Shoreline Community College in our own way. Winning our ninth General Excellence award is just another reminder that our student-run paper generates quality content and displays our tight-knit teamwork.”
This year’s contest covered journalism produced by community college students across Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Idaho, and Montana between spring quarter 2018 and winter quarter 2019. Over 380 pieces were submitted with entries judged by journalism professionals and instructors at local universities.
“These awards show some of the great work happening at colleges and universities around the Pacific Northwest,” said Melissa Jones, president of the Pacific Northwest Association of Journalism Educators. “Our communities should be proud of this work.”
The Ebbtide staff won third place in the Comprehensive Coverage category for its work covering February’s snowstorms. Vanessa McVay, The Ebbtide Advisor, said, “I was particularly pleased with the award for that work because it included breaking news, which can be tricky for a biweekly student publication.”
The Ebbtide staff, led by Lualhati, “rallied to put the paper out at the Shoreline Public Library during snowmageddon since campus was closed on production day,” said McVay. “Some other student papers delayed publication that week. Even the printer said he was impressed.”
In addition to taking 2nd in the General Excellence category and third in Comprehensive Coverage, The Ebbtide staff also won:
1st place, Sports News Reporting – Ed Strong, Sports Editor
3rd place, Headline Writing – Nova Clark, Features Editor
3rd place, General News Reporting – Elliot Raven, Contributor
Honorable mention, Sports Feature Reporting – Ed Strong, Sports Editor
2nd place, Personality Profile – The Ebbtide Staff
