A sold-out crowd attended the fourth annual Shoreline Short Short Film Festival in Shoreline Community College’s main campus theater this past Sat., Feb. 8. The single-night event is sponsored by the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council and gives a platform to emerging filmmakers from Washington. The College is a supporting sponsor of the event.
Washington filmmakers submitted 43 films to the festival with 16 films screened. Among the films shown was Blind Spot, directed by Kira Sipler and written by T.K. Johnson. Sipler is an alumna of the College’s Performing Arts & Digital Filmmaking program and Johnson is a current student. In total, 11 Shoreline alumni and current students crewed the film.
Another screened film, Now It’s Time to Rock, was shot at the College. Tony Doupé, an instructor in the Film, Drama & Cinema Department at the College, was one of four industry professionals who served as jurors.
Established in 2017, the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council conceived of the festival as a way to support local filmmakers with an opportunity to show their unique visions and celebrate the film medium with the larger Shoreline community. Over the past few years, it’s grown into a signature event.
“The community support for this is paramount. We sold out, which shows an appetite for unique and nontraditional storytelling in our community,” said Kevin Sheen, Publicity Manager for Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council. “The event is a one-stop-shop where audiences can experience a variety of genres as well as meet and attend a Q+A with the filmmakers.
Hosting the festival on campus opens doors for the College’s student filmmakers. “This is a fantastic event we look forward to each year,” said Doupé. “Not only is it a chance for our students to present their best work, but they also get to meet and mingle with working professionals in the local film community. Those connections are priceless and a valuable opportunity that comes with studying at Shoreline.”
